Sometimes I wake up missing realism.
The day these studies came to life I was on a mission to have fun by mixing styles and drawing low-stakes sketches whilst going back to my roots: picking an image randomly and re-drawing it from scratch.
I was inspired, as the knights came one after the other in a couple of nights, followed by the Lord of The Rings inspired designs.
Tolkien's universe was foundational to me.
"Why do I want to see a movie about an old man with rings?" - I asked my father in law who came by with the rented DVD.
I was a very stubborn 8 years old boy.
Luckily he insisted and gave me no option: if I wanted to make fun of it I'd have to watch it first, so I could come back with a formed opinion.
I got o b s e s s e d with it, and years later when I discovered all the books, studies and concept arts my mind was blown away. It fed my curiosity and showed me that there was always the option to create entire worlds if you wanted to...
Now it's one of my very few movies I could rewatch over and over again.
And in this series of studies, almost by accident I came up with a small collection that's the sum of speed due to fun, action and practice. No stakes. The mere act of creating and art for the sake of expression.
In plain sight, these might not come across as the most unique designs (apart from the natural flow and style of my strokes), but they DO represent the purest form of expression, the most natural and honest form of drawing for me.
After all, it is sketching and exploration, the art forms I love the most.
That's what makes them special, and why I decided to share them.
The originals were made in red tones, but I decided to add a black and grey option since red doesn't go well in every single environment. In any case, this poster will bring a touch of epic grandeur to your spaces, hope you like them.
